This is an incredible interview and I am so excited to read this book. I've recently read Morphic Resonance by Rupert Sheldrake, which is also compelling in its criticism of the current mainstream description of evolution, but it also leans into metaphysical beliefs, so I'm excited to hear Jessica's perspective.

I just subscribed! I also recently wrote about how AI researchers could benefit from communicating more with biologists, and I'd be honored if you read it: https://maiascience.substack.com/p/ai-fungi

Thanks for reading and subscribing. I read your recent post, I think you give Yudkowsky more credit than he deserves (see my interview of Adam Becker for more on this), but I agree that much of the AI conversation is devoid of established insights from broader natural science.

So interesting! I always thought there had to be something more to evolution, and when I discovered Lamarck, I thought he made sense, even though at the time he was still poo-pooed, and when I learned about epigenetics, I thought, yes! And since external influences can effect chemical changes that turn genes on and off, it makes sense that external influences can be not just the physical environment, but also the cultural.

And I like the idea of looking at cells, not just neurons. It seems to me that cells act like they have intelligence!

A pleasure to read this interview. Opens a broader perspective beyond daily political chaos
